As you get ready to go back to school, don’t forget about your back-to-school dental checklist! When you complete your back-to-school dental checklist, you will attend school with a strong and healthy smile!
1. Schedule your six month dental appointments.
It is strongly recommended that you visit your dentist every six months for a routine dental checkup. These checkups are extremely important and they are vital if you wish to have a clean and healthy oral cavity.
2. Establish a healthy oral hygiene routine.
When you’re rushing off to school, it’s easy to forget to brush your teeth, which is why it is important to establish a healthy oral hygiene routine as well and make time for it! Make sure you brush your teeth every morning and every night and you floss your teeth at least once a day. If you can, rinse your mouth with bacteria-killing or fluoride mouthwash. If you are consistent with this routine, you will reduce the risks of having major dental problems, and you won’t have to miss school for emergency dental appointments in the future.
3. Eat healthy lunches and snacks.
Did you know that healthy food is not only good for your body, but it’s also good for your teeth? If you eat healthy lunches and snacks each day, you will have a strong and reliable smile. Some healthy treats you can pack include: fruit, string cheese, vegetables, and unsweetened apple sauce. Try to avoid eating foods like granola bars and fruit roll-ups. Instead of drinking juice or soda, try drinking more water.
4. Protect your teeth with a mouth guard.
If you play sports or high-contact activities, it is wise to protect your smile by using a mouth guard. There are many mouth guards available in the dental world today, including bite-and-boil and custom mouth guards, and we encourage you to wear one so you can prevent oral injuries.
5. Replace your worn toothbrush.
Dentists today strongly recommend replacing your toothbrush every 3-4 months or after your toothbrush has been extremely worn down. The beginning of a new school year is a great time to check your toothbrush and replace it if needed!
